When an engine overheats we always tend to think there's something wrong with the cooling system, but it can also be that more heat is being dumped in there than should be. Timing too far advanced will cause overheating, and any add-on transmission or oil cooler that dumps heat into the engine coolant is suspect. Even if the transmission cooler was stock, too much slippage in the tranny will add too much heat.
