I am working on a 2nd series bed currently and I believe that the wood does sit on the little sill attached to the bottom of the front panel and there is a little sil on the rear valance as well otherwise the angle strips on the sides sit on the wood- hope this helps. Remeber that there are bolt holes for the metal bed strips to keep lined up.
