In CA, With or without door signage, the scales are only for 8001 GVW and up. But not for private vehicles, registered to individuals. Techincally many, many private pickups, such as Dodge Cummins 3500's and ferds and gms are OVER the weight limit. If I ever get stopped by the CHP in my Dodge Chassis/Cab Ram, they will look at the door sticker showing the GCVWR, which is over 8,000 lbs. I will be directed to a local CHP office to get a free Cal Trans number which must be affixed to the door or side of my "private" truck, no fine, no fee,...however ALL vehicles with numbers are required to stop at all scales,...and then the fun begins. I've had two friends who had to get numbers on their Dodges, but both were Chassis/Cabs with flatbeds. I have a utility bed on mine and have so far escaped scrutiny in CA, AZ, CO, UT, NM and TX.
If your truck is registered as a company vehicle, with signs, you are subject to be stopped. If your vehicle has no signs and is privately registered to an individual, you're probably OK. Freightliner and Sterling have crew cab, 5th wheel haulers rated OVER 26,000 lbs that are registered as RV's and exempt, so go figure......
Most scales have signs that say "NO Pickups" or "No private vehicles"
Lose the signs (I have magnetic signs).
