The problem is the AISC calculator looks complicated to me and I AM an engineer. The only structural stuff I do is for myself, because that's not my specialty, but I use the simple equations in the handbooks, which work fine for standard supports, simple loads, and standard steel (or wood) shapes. I don't think it's really necessary to "go bigger" except to the extent that you make use of whatever steel you can get cheaply, such as something used or surplus. When you design to 20,000 psi stress, that already gives you a safety factor of about 5 for most structural steel. That leaves room for a lot of rust, damage, defects, poor assembly, etc before there's any danger of it falling down.
