In MV mag a while back, somebody described a simple jig you could make to hold the punches square and parallel. It was basically two light pieces of angle iron welded in parallel with their flanges facing apart, and with a spacing between them that just fit the size of your punches. Harbor Freight has punch sets that are very cheap and seem to hold up fine on soft metal like keys and aluminum data plates. I have not tried that punch jig myself. The only problem I can see with it is that it doesn't control the spacing between the numbers, so you'd still have to be careful to get that right. You'd also have to be careful to hit each punch with just the right force (more for an "M" than for a "1", for example) to make them look even. It would be worth practicing on some aluminum roof flashing or other scrap material.
