Well. I answered my own question. It is a 8 3/4" third member. And I confirmed my rememberance that the only ratios available for the 9 5/8 axle were the 4.89 and 5.83. And here I thought that I was learning something new!

Chris, I would recommend you read through Zentmeyer's book before installing that third member. Since you are using a 1/2 ton rear and a 1 ton front housing, you will have to treat them differently. Installation of a 8 3/4 third member in the front will result in the axle center line of the differential being 1/16" toward the back of the truck. In order to correct this error, the third member will need to be machined. John suggests that it is tolerable for front-end use because of the additional "slop" in the system relative to the back, but it wouldn't be a bad idea to go ahead with the machining.

Enjoy!
Dan
