I found 1/2 dozen pieces of 1/4" pin, the longest being about 1", in bott. of front differential housing. Looking at shop manual and under "lock pins differential" in the very handy archives of this forum (thanks Joe) i'm guessing that may be what they are --- Diff. case cap lock pins.
Both front and rear diff. case caps are missing 2 pins each. Both front and rear diff. gear units feel tight and show no strange wear patterns on ring gear teeth. I'd prefer to not open units. Any opinions on the likelihood of that case cap unscrewing by itself with only 1 pin?

Is it considered "easier" to replace the drive pinion shaft bearing and seal with carrier mounted in axel housing?
