You wire in a generic ballast resistor off a 12V vehicle, the coil is designed for 6v but battery reserve is probably 8-8.2 voltys thus the increased voltage will heat up the coil windings and ineveitably cause overheating and failure. Even though your charging system is only putting out 6.8-7.2 volts when running. Also if the coil heats up enough it will temporarily open up on you and cause loss of ignition. Then after cooling it may work fine again..but not a long term idea!
