Old ones are solid carbon. The newer ones appear to be copper/carbon ...um...matix? blend? amalgam? They are probbably sintered copper with carbon infused. Like Oilite bushings that are bronze chips fused together and lube oil forced between the chips. Anyway, I've never seen a coppery one chip, but I have seen lots of carbon brushs chipped. And the copper ones wear lots longer.
