The original wood in my second series bed was southern yellow pine, painted black.
The wood from Mar-K is red oak, and southern red oak at that which is much less dense that what I can get in Wisconsin. If you don't have the ability to fabricate your own bed wood then I think its a good product. If you have the ability to do it I woood make your own out of a better species of wood.
I'm in the process of fabricating new bedwood out of select kiln dried white oak. Making the template to rabbet out the two outside boards was the most challenging. The info on Todd Somer's T-137 site is good for 1st series but the length, width, and number of boards is different on the second series. I can e-mail a picture of how I did the outside to you if you are interested in making your own.
