Dan,
Red oak and white oak are the same in regards to hardness. The ONLY difference is that red oak has tiny tubes that run the length (you can see them in the end grain) The Red oak has these tubes as well, but they are segmented, like bamboo. Water and rot spores are able to travel in these tubes and can get a deeper foothold in the Red. The segmented tubes in the White stop the spores from getting in. That, and a slight color difference is all the difference.
