Part of your problem may be indexing the bit in the chuck. When you insert the chuck/bit in the side of the Drill Doc, The griper that indexes the bit must grab the bit exactly. There should be no movement in the bit when you try to turn it CW/CCW. Once indexed and chuck locked you should be good to go. If the index is off, so is the angle on the bit. I have very good results with my Drill Doc. Like Dave, I dont try to sharpen below 1/8" bits. If your Drill Doc is not new, its also possible the grinding stone inside is seriously worn allowing non accurate grinding.

Check that index of the bit in the chuck and try again.
