The advice to go to your local DMV is the sound advice, Every state is different, regardless of some advice given for another state. It may be as simple as getting a bill of sale from the property owner that shows the VIN or frame number, or as complicated as someone made it here. Most states will require a claim of abandonment, a lien, or some type of lien procedure that the propertry owner must first persue to aquire legal title, prior to giving you the Bill of Sale, but this entire group of threads is speculation, call your DMV or go on-line at your local DMV website and find out first hand.
