Thanks to everyone who responded, flamers and flamees alike. I was able to press the old bearing off by using a lot more force than I thought should be necessary, but that's just a reflection of my lack of experience in this area. BTW, I did read an aftermarket manual and it was not helpful.
Opinions expressed on the forum are as varied as the personalities behind them. "Read the manual." and "Press while rotating the widget 113.5 degrees anti-clockwise" are both valid when you take all the advise together and average them.
There is a vast amount of knowledge here and most of the time it is expressed without a condescending attitude. I for one am grateful. Thanks guys!
