Because sometimes you may not want or need the extra boost. That's what the circuit is designed to do: boost a low battery with a fresh one.

And I always like to simplify circuitry so that it's easier to understand. Automatic things tend to fail more often, and are harder to troubleshoot, than simple things.

It's just a matter of choice, I suppose, but that's the way I always hook thenm up.
