I really appreciate the responses and will have to look into the pole construction a little closer. Since this is the only accessory building that can be built on this property, and I am not particularly wealthy, it is important to do it correct the first time.
The current plan is to have the building set up with the large doors on the gable end of the structure so that the 48' depth could be taken advantage of and also allow for a 12' high door (sliding, swing, or roll-up) to be used. Another thought was to support the upper level of the salt-box design with steel beams so they could be used with a small trolley and crane arrangement.
