The sodium valves and valve guides has NO bearing on the ability of these engines to run on NO-LEAD fuel. All FLH 6's from 1938 and up were made with a hardend (replaceable) exhaust valve seat. This is the reason they can run on modern fuels. The sodium was for engines in stationary use were they were operated at a constant speed for an extended period of time. The soudium would act as a heat sink to keep the valve STEM from stretching and thus to reduce the lift to a point were the valve would not operate.
