Your spool should spin freely but not side ways. The clutch slides to the spool not spool to clutch. You are missing a lock ring on the shaft if the spool has side travel. This may well be the way it was used last. It was easier to do after the lock ring disappeared than clean and lube the shaft for the clutch ring to move towards the spool easily. I take it your fork lever is missing?
