Invest in a little silicone, some new oil and a pan gasket. Pull the oil pan, screen the oil that drops out looking for the teeth. Look up into the block at the gear (rotate it by hand with the coil wire off) and inspect the gear. This might also be done looking into the oil pump gear hole.
You need to change the oil anyway, and you need the metal junk OUT of the pan and oil pump pickup (and any other oil galley you can check). An extra 2 hours NOW can add YEARs of "around the yard" work to that engine.
PS: It's been a while, I can't promise you will see the camshaft gear from the oil pan view, someone may tell you though. WAW
PPS: yes, you already had the distributor out, so the coil wire was off already. WAW
