It was during the times of high double digit inflation, lots of people out of work, gas shortages and long lines at gas pumps, when big cubic inch anythings weren't worth a plugged nickel, when the Japanese first started making inroads into the auto industry here. If I recall right I think the Iranians had just seized our embassy, though this may have been aired prior to that, it certainly was aired during it. And, BTW, Canada risked its ass for us by taking in Americans and giving them fake Canadian passports and they shut down their Iranian embassy, brazenly leaving the Tehran airport. The Iranians would not have taken kindly to their risk if they had found out. So yes, Canada, unlike others, has at least stuck its neck out for us.
