It isn't used vegetable oil. It's any fat (rendered pork or beef, vegetable oil, etc.) chemically taken apart into its' constituents - a glycerol molecule which is discarded, and 3 fatty acid molecules, which are esterified with methanol to make a methyl-fatty acid ester. This, unlike vegetable oil per se, has the physical and chemical properties to properly work in a conventional unmodified diesel engine, and a much lower pour point than vegetable oil. small quantities of vegetable oil can be used in diesels, but make really stinky exhaust and will carbon up injectors if used in any quantity.
