'76, eh? Encountered same problem on same model set up as a fire engine. Did all as suggested by Steve, Garrison, and Alan. Turned out to be conflict of interest between the exhaust system and the fuel line which is tucked neatly up inside the chassis, about seven inches from the tail pipe. Faulty tail pipe was blasting
onto the fuel line, causing vapor lock. Worth checking. Woody
