: I have a '73 W200 that I am building. I have a 440 and a freshly built 727 to drop in. I've heard rumors that the currrent overdrive trannies are just a good old Torqueflite with an overdrive unit in place of the tailshaft housing. Unfortunately, I don't have any idea as to how strong it is, or if it's true. My future plans call for a 500 cube stump puller to replace the 440 at a later date. Does anyone know if I can put the factory overdrive on my big block case and how strong will it be? I have the remote mount 205 T-case and know it would need moved, but right now that would be easy, compared to when the truck is all together. Thanks for the help.
I have a '93 W350 with a 5.9 and it has a 4 speed overdrive torqueflite in it. I've been told that it's just as strong as a regular torqueflite but not to tow a heavy load with the overdrive engaged. Every year I haul 20,000 pounds of grain, per trip, 5 miles to the local elevator. I've never had problems and I always change fluid once a year.
