I wouldn't worry about it. Whatever you do, don't rush out and change the oil pressure relief spring. The relief spring is absolutely NOT affecting your idle oil pressure when the engine is hot. If it's allowing 40 psi when it's cold, it is not bypassing below 40 psi. Actually, 12 psi at idle might be in the normal range for a hot engine using straight-weight oil. I can tell you that if you switch to a synthetic multi-viscosity oil, your idle oil pressure will go up, probably by about 10 psi or more. Another thing to consider is the accuracy of the gauge. If it reads 12 psi, it might actually be anywhere from 5 to 20 psi, although I'd guess that it's probably correct within about 3-4 psi. By the way, if I recall, the shop manual for the 454 V8 in my '95 Chev Suburban says that anything over 10 (or was it 15) psi is okay for the hot idle oil pressure. Mine was reading about 20 on a hot summer day. When I went to synthetic oil, the hot idle oil pressure went up to about 32 psi. Also, if your idle speed is a bit low, the pressure will drop. Make sure it's idling at the recommended speed.
