My 80 year old friend got me interested in guns and knives at a young age, when I was in the sixth grade. At that time I carried a single blade, Case knife with a blade 3-1/2 inches long. It was in my pocket in school and anywhere else. Imagine the crisis that would occur today if some kid was found to have a knife in his pocket?
When he was a kid, he walked to school, left his rifle in the main office, and then picked it up and hunted on the way home.
