Adding gas to the oil

Glad you got it. That had to be the cause. Thinking about it reminded me of instructions in an old TM I have called "Maintenance of Ordnance Materiel in Extreme Cold Weather". When the temperature was too cold even for OE 10, the TM advised adding up to 10% gasoline (not kerosene) to the engine oil to thin it out even more. Thereafter, when checking the oil, any reduction in the dipstick reading was assumed to be due to evaporation of the gasoline, so straight gasoline should be added as needed to keep the oil at the correct level. Can you imagine doing that nowadays?
