My Dad showed me that trick too. He had a Triumph Spitfire that was constantly vapor locking. He put on 5 or 6 clothspins and never had any more problems. I ended up with the car when he died and the clothspins are still doing their job! I think they act as heat sinks, to funnel off the heat. same as the fins on a radiator.
