Went to start my '64/'68 W200('64 Driveline / '68 Motor/Bellhousing) yesterday in the 10 degree temperatures and got nothing but spinning - no engagement with the flywheel.
So much for my weekly trip to the dump - had to pile the garbage in our H*nda CRV and make the trip. Good thing it was cold!
Anyway - I crawled under the truck and pulled the starter. When bench testing it the bendix engages fine and the gear goes all of the way to the end of the shaft. I manually pushed the bendix open and tried to counter rotate the shaft and got resistance, and also got free wheeling in the rotation that I expected.
Thinking it was just cold I made sure that the starter was nice and warm and crawled back under the truck in the dirt and put it back in (couldn't feel my fingers after I was done!). Hit the key - same thing ... nothing but spinning. - no flywheel engagement, no scraping, etc.
Something is slipping somewhere - and I already hobcobbled it together about 5 years ago, so I've been living on borrowed time ... time to get a new one.
I went to Auto-Zone and they looked up the part and brought me the standard Mopar 2 bolt. Looked up the part with every year/combo and still came up with the same starter.
Anybody got a good NAPA (or other store) part number for this starter?
Thanks,
Ken C.
