Arthur: The solution is simple. Minimum of 2 tablespoons per gallon of water. for 5 gals just simply pour a bit in, about equal to 10 tablespoons. You can watch your charger and add a bit more as long as the amperage climbs, but most likely it is already enough.

Sodium carbonate (soda ash, washing soda (arm and hammer) is the best. Sodium bicarbonate (baking soda) also works but not as effectively.

The more rust, the longer the time in the solution. Be sure to have clean electrical connections and clean off waste anode. Use steel wire to suspend in liquid, do not put battery charger clamps in water.

It will soften and remove paint so if you want to preserve paint, you need to go another route. Be very careful around the produced hydrogen gas
