300 series stainless is non magnetic, some of the 400 series will magnitize so the magnet test isn't always right. 400 series is more susceptable to rust but some of the characteristics of it make it more desirable on certain things(strength, workability and such) Stainless will rust over a LONG time but on most things it isn't worth mentioning. Rusting stainless doesn't seem like it should be true but it is. I'm sure other guys who know lots more about metallurgy can chime in here. Kevin
