You can pay for it with PayPal so you don't have to give out your credit card to image event, and they have been pretty reliable for me.
For that cost you can host 1,500 images of any size you want, and if you need more space there is a one time charge of $25 for another 1,500 images.
I had to break down and do that, but my bill for the next year was still only $25.
It is not perfect, but it is easy to upload, easy to share, and direct linking does work.
You can not do direct linking with image event if you only have a trial version, you have to pay the $25 to do that.
There are other picture hosting sites out there, but this is the only one I have ever used, so I can not recomend any others.
