The last digest contained the beginning of this thread. I received quite a few suggestions for what appeard to be valve noise. I confirmed that the noise was there when the engine was not under load. The suggestion that confimred what it was, was diconnecting the fan belt. Once disconnected the noise went away. I still don't know if it is the generator bearings, water pump bearings, or what I think it is, is belt flap. The belt adjustment is maxed out so I am fabricating a new bracket. The belt is in good condition and I always had it maxed out so replacing the belt is not the only answer (though I may well replace it due to age, 4 years).

I was amazed at how quiet the engine is with out the water pump, fan, and generator turning.

Thanks for all of the suggestions. It kept me from some expensive troubleshooting.
