If it only smokes when you goose it, the accelerator pump is set too rich. It is usually adjusted by moving a link to another hole, closer to the throttle link's pivot.

Hotter plugs don't burn more gas, the just get hotter and burn the residue off the plug and prevent fouling. Too hot, and it can cause pre-ignition, pinging, spark knock,etc.
