If the static can jump through the air from the machine to Chris, it can also jump from Chris to the ground through the air. Unless you're trying to do a "mad scientist" demonstration, you never want yourself charged up with electricity. Even if Chris managed to keep himself insulated so that he was at the same voltage as whatever was producing the charge, as soon as he stepped off the mat or reached towards some grounded thing, he'd get a heck of a shock as the charge jumped off of him. The solution is to drain the charge at its source, not to charge the operator up to the same voltage.
