You know it really isn't an issue to pull the head on these things. It gives such a better picture of the combustion chamber then just trying to diagnose a plug. As the pistons and rings are new, and the crank was properly machined I am going to focus on the possiblity of carbon build up for now. It is actually real easy to remove the carbon mechanically with the head off.

The dirty secret I haven't mentioned is that the timing chain and gears were replaced during the quasi-rebuild, and I felt certain that the alignment marks were porperly set, but the timing is nowhere close to the markes on the balance. I have been timing this thing with a vacuum gauge the whole time.

Rick in SC - I have used the transmission fluid on several vehicles. I have never had any trouble after using it. I had actually not heard of using water, but it makes sense.

I haven't been able to test for the noise without a load yet. I learned a new lesson in parenting this weekend. NEVER LET YOUR 12 YEAR OLD DAUGHTER GO TO SLEEPOVERS ON BOTH FRIDAY AND SATURDAY NIGHT. Sunday just turns out to be a crabby kinda day.

Thanks for all of the help so far.
