Vaughn,

As far as the points go, I do have a ballast resister. The truck is a 1960 so it is 12 Volt. I have always attributed the burned points to the advance I was running on the truck then and the long trip. I have since retarded the timing to closer to spec. Yes, there is a story behind the timing but it isn't worth the time explaining it now. Safe to say that since I retarded the timing I havnen't had a problem with points.

I will try the detergent additive. Anything is possible with a truck that doesn't get driven often. When I had the block torn down I flushed the oil passages several times, but on again off again driving can really work oil hard. Especially in the Phoenix climate.

As far as the tip goes, I knew I was taking a chance without a complete tear down. I just didn't have the money at the time. Sort of still don't.

Have we ruled out valve float or is that still on the table?
