Most virus/spyware scanners report tracking cookies, but they are usually not nefarious. True spyware is executable code that does something evil with your computer. Tracking cookies are simple "notes" used by most complex websites to keep track of where you are on their site. Otherwise, a website like amazon.com, for example would forget who you are and what you're buying as you go from one page to another. Another simple example is dodgepowerwagon.com, which uses a cookie to keep track of your name, email address, and most recently posted web link and image link.
