Please don't take offense, but people who are not conversant with the miracle of electrons should either let someone else do it, or get the right tools and read up on the correct procedures.
I have no idea how to fix anything BUT electrical problems. If I were to try to fix a carburetor, you'd be hearing about the loud blast registering 5.3 on the Richter Scale, and the attendant toxic plume, on the evening news. Want to see a truck go sideways down the road? Just ask me to "malign" the steering.
There are much better ways to test electrical problems than with a piece of wire. In fact, we call that the Darwin Method. You should use at least a test lamp, and preferably a meter. There are those of us here who will more than generously offer advice.
