More trees have died from misguided fire control policies and from lack of harvesting which cause overcrowding and disease (which leads to beetle infestations) than from logging. Little known fact is that there are more trees NOW than 200 years ago but the trees are now in different locations, such as, cities, parks, preserves, tree farms, lumber company owned land, etc. Where trees have suffered is in National Forests where fires have destroyed vast tracts of land because of over protection. Climatic changes such as changing weather patterns have also changed the conditions that support where trees can or can't sustain growth.
