You do really have to do it quite hard, though. Takes about 1/5th of a turn to unlock.
Good news is button replacement kits are still available if you break it.
Getting the wheel off the column and the drag link off the steering box output shaft are .... not nice jobs. Steering wheel puller is the thing.
I think VPW still has a few NOS columns, and if I was in trouble with one I'd consider buying a new wheel, column, and drag link rather than working on the originals as they all pretty much tend to wear out together and things like an out-of-round drag link ball are much easier replaced than reworked.
