I did about the same thing dave did, but rather than painting the whole glass back, I got a small can of white (not rattle can) and used a toothpick to fill the impressions. If the paint got away at any point I used a Q-tip to clean off what I didn't want when still wet. The gauge backs, I painted flat black. I lost the graduation marks doing that but if that had been real important to me I would have gone to the office supply store (Staples, Office Max out here) and gotten some small vinyl letters and (as all I would have needed was bars) cut up some "I"s or "T"s. I have used these letters to made speedometers and gauges usable on other vehicles. They are not a perfect match but they sure look better than some of the faces I have worked on. When using the vinyl letters, you can use a bit of dish soap in water to lubricate so that they can be manipulated into position before they dry.

Don't be afraid, WC square gauges are some of the easiest this shade tree type has done.
