My guess on your problem is possibly a loose hot wire to the ignition, a loose high voltage wire from the coil to the distributor, an intermittent ground inside the distributor, a bad condensor or a bad coil.

Start trouble shooting by using a jumper wire from the battery to the (+) side of the coil - if it runs perfect you have found the problem.

Try wiggling the high voltage wire from the coil to the distributor while running (use a real good insulated tool for this or you'll look like one of Mac's grilled cows or worse)- if the problem gets better or worse, then you may have found the problem.

Open the distributor and check the wiring inside, especially the wire to the points and the wire that goes through the side of the distributor, to see if anything is rubbed through and grounding.

Install a new condensor, they're cheap.

Try hooking up a spare coil to see if it runs better - everybody has a spare coil stashed somewhere, even a 12-volt coil should work for a short test.

Good luck.
