What year is your truck? If it is from 1946 thru about 1950, the Model 36 heater is correct for your truck and the center of the dash is the correct position for the heater and defroster controls.
Those knobs have a spring catch inside of them. By putting the blade of a very small screwdriver in the slit, you are moving the spring and releasing the catch. You may have to push the spring in somewhat, or move it to the front or back of the knob to get the catch to release.
