This 6x6 has six driven hubs with ten wheels and tires mounted. A 4x4 with four sets of dual wheels is still a 4x4. Some who would count wheels and tires would add the spare(s). And is the steering wheel a wheel?

The numbers on either side of the "x" refer to total number of hubs (called "wheels) compared to the number that apply traction through the wheels and tires. A two wheel drive is a 4x2.

Over the road trucks are not classified by the number of driven hubs. An "18 wheeler" counts tires on the tractor and the trailer. The steering wheel and the "fifth" wheel are not counted.
