Not only are there no books about actually making real things (cooking doesn't count) in Barnes and Noble, there are very few in the public libraries or school libraries any more either. When I was a kid I used to practically live in "621" dewey decimal section of the library (tech books) a few years ago when I bought my first lathe and welding torch I went to the library (in a city of 100,000 people) to get some basic metalworking books, and there were none that were of any use at all. They had lots of computers and stacks and stacks of romance novels, CDs, pop-psych stuff and newage, but next to nothing on how to actually build something. I did eventually find some good basic metalworking books in the dumpster behind the high school, along with a perfectly good Miller spot-welder.
