Chris you are on the right track, you can cut new threads and make a new nut, carbide tooling will be required. You could also weld the shaft with a T.I.G.or M.I.G. process and turn the shaft back to the original size and make your nut. The spray weld is another option, there may be a welding busniess in your area who could spray weld your shaft or a machine shop that has spray weld equipment. Hope this helps Merry Christmas
