I've run the XZL's and XL' in axle deep snow and on hard packed snow (ice) XZL's seem average, the XL's are terrible unless you cut them up with a groover. Fat tires may make you float up on top of the snow, but as soon as you get on a icy road you're in big trouble if your not carefull.
I got a set of 20" wheels and cheap 8.25-20 traction tires that I studded for winter driving.
