I have engine heaters on all my equipment.
The PW and Bombardier has the tank type, external which circulates heated water through the block. My Carryall, M37 and Ram all diesel have heaters in a sand cast hole in the block. All work equally well. The PW and Carryall sit in a heated shop so they only get plugged in at low temps when parked outside all day. The Ram, parked outside, is plugged in from 20 degrees down. The heaters make a tremendous difference in starting when the temp is well below zero. But in honesty, I have no idea if they save any wear and tear in the long run. But a warm engine at 25 to 30 below is worth the electricity.
