I use the lower hose type heaters or the ones that hook to the heater hose either one is good. I only turn them on if it is near zero out for a eaiser start. Now the diesels are a different story they get pluged in when the temps are near 32 degs or lower. My school bus will hardly start if it is not pluged the night befor. Once it has been run I don't plug it in for the time the kids are in school if it is 30 degs or so but any lower I need to plug it in for a few hours. The lower hose type heats the water it rises and more cold water circulates into the heater for a more even heat of the system. Sure makes a difference when you fire them off much faster cranking.
