In the days before detergent was invented, the sludge was allowed to settle out in the oil pan. That's why many Dodges had a float on the oil pick up. Pulling the pan for cleanout was routine mainenance.

With detergents in the oil, the crud is kept in solution, depending on the filter to trap it. With detergent oil and no filter, dirt keeps circulating to wear/corrode the engine parts.

Perhaps folks removed the filter on the impression that the filter cost pressure. But,the pressure relief plunger only allows oil flow to the filter when the pressure is adequite. But, filters were optional, at additional cost, some years.
